Telehealth Applications
Telehealth, or ‘telemedicine’, is being used by clinicians throughout the world to enable patients to ‘see’ a specialist without the time and expense of physically travelling to another location. Australian rebates reimburse for video consultations, which are a live interaction between a consultant or specialist and patient from a distance.
The benefits of distance technology to patients are:
- Instant access to specialist care · Reduced waiting time to see the specialist
- Reduced travel time and cost, especially for patients in rural or regional areas
- Reduced absence from work
A video solution in a practice or clinic can be used for many other practical applications such as:
- Ongoing self-education
- Training for staff at different sites
- Communicating and meeting with other specialists
- Board and staff meetings
*$6000 rebate only in 2011/2012 Tax Year. From July 2012, the government’s one-off rebate will decrease. Go to www.mbsonline.gov.au/telehealth for the latest information.
